Nov. 16: Hair for Hope
Third annual Hair for Hope event to be held at Louis Redding Hall
10:37 a.m., Nov. 10, 2014--The third annual Hair for Hope project at the University of Delaware, which benefits the B+ Foundation and Children With Hair Loss, two organizations supporting children facing childhood cancer, will be held from noon-4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16, in Louis Redding Hall.
This is a cause that is very near and dear to the hearts of UD students, as many of them have experienced the impact of cancer within their own families, a project representative said.

UD alumna Amanda Cahill and student C.J. Burke created and initiated the first Hair for Hope back in 2012, which raised $500.
In 2013, Hair for Hope raised over $2,200 for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. Seventy ponytails were donated to Children With Hair Loss, and over 140 haircuts were given.
This year, 25 volunteer stylists from New Trend Hair Salon will be cutting student and community members’ hair. Anyone can donate eight inches of their hair, free of charge. Other type of haircuts will be offered for a $12 donation.
Students and community members will also be able to dye a strip of their hair for an $8 donation or colored extensions for a $5 donation. All monetary proceeds will go to the B+ Foundation.
Nichole Schneider, student engagement adviser, is in charge of executing and overseeing this year’s event.
Schneider said, “Our committee has spent months preparing for the event and working to make sure that everyone who comes out to support the B+ Foundation and Children With Hair Loss enjoys their experience and learns more about what it means to serve.”
There will also be baked goods made by the residents of the Redding, Gilbert, Smyth Complex, as well as raffle prizes courtesy of generous sponsors: Panera Bread, Newark Natural Foods, Alex and Ani, Plato’s Closet, Insomnia Cookies, SASS Cupcakes, Newark Deli and Bagel, and New Trend Hair Salon.
Joey Rea, a UD student, attended Hair for Hope as a resident of Redding last year.
“Going to Hair for Hope last year was an awesome experience. Not only did the event successfully raise money for a good cause, but it also brought a lot of students together for a fun Sunday afternoon,” said Rea.
“The continued success of Hair for Hope means the world to our staff and students,” said Schneider, “It’s an honor for us to come together to play a small role in fighting childhood cancer.”
Hair for Hope is planned and executed by the Redding, Gilbert and Smyth Residence Hall Complex in conjunction with New Trend Hair Salon and Bliss Hair Salon.
