11:09 a.m., Nov. 6, 2014--Delaware INBRE is hosting a celebration next week to recognize its recent funding renewal from the National Institutes of Health and also highlight the impact of Delaware’s IDeA programs on biomedical research in the First State.

The event will be held from 4:30-7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Embassy Suites, 654 S. College Ave., in Newark.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

INBRE stands for the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, and its goal is to grow statewide research capacity through collaborations in research, professional development, equipment and infrastructure purchases and mentoring.

Delaware is one of 23 states and Puerto Rico receiving IDeA grants, which are aimed at states with historically low levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health.

In August, Delaware INBRE was awarded a five-year, $18.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the state is contributing an additional $5 million during the award period, bringing the funding total for Delaware INBRE to more than $23 million.

This is the second renewal for the Delaware INBRE program, which represents a collaboration with six statewide research institutions -- the University of Delaware, Wesley College, Delaware Technical Community College, Delaware State University, Christiana Care Health System and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

The First State has received more than $136 million in IDeA funding, making it a top recipient of these awards.

While the Nov. 13 event will celebrate the recent INBRE renewal, it also will be a time to highlight the significant successes of the Delaware IDeA program.

The IDeA program also includes several Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence -- including two that were recently funded -- and the DE-CTR ACCEL program, which began in 2013.
