UD alumni from New York City to Washington plan special events

9:14 a.m., Nov. 21, 2014--From New York to Baltimore, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., University of Delaware alumni are planning events to engage and entertain fellow Blue Hens.

The New York City Alumni Club has scheduled a trip to the Signature Theatre to see the acclaimed play Our Lady of Kibeho on Dec. 2, while on Dec. 6 alumni in the Baltimore area will enjoy the holiday Symphony of Lights in Columbia, Maryland.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

Alumni in Pittsburgh will visit the city’s Wigle Whiskey Distillery on Dec. 7 and the DC Alumni Club will hold a holiday party on Dec. 11, with Blue Hens encouraged to bring a donation to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank.

The Baltimore Alumni Club will sponsor a visit to the Maryland Science Center in the Inner Harbor after the turn of the year, with a trip planned Jan. 24.

Information on these and other activities follows:

Tuesday, Dec. 2, 7-10 p.m.: “Our Lady of Kibeho” at New York’s Signature Theatre. The New York City Alumni Club will host a trip to the Signature Theatre to see Our Lady of Kibeho by award-winning playwright Katori Hall. There will be drinks beforehand and a discussion following.

Saturday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m.: Lancaster mystery dinner. Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area alumni are invited to The Murder in Toyland murder mystery dinner at Bube’s Brewery in Mt. Joy.

Saturday, Dec. 6, 6:45 p.m.: Symphony of Lights. Baltimore area alumni will meet at the Greene Turtle on McGaw Road in Columbia, Maryland, then tour the “Symphony of Lights,” a display of 70 animated and stationary light creations sponsored by Macy’s to raise funds for the Howard County General Hospital.

Sunday, Dec. 7, noon: Kent and Sussex dinner and a movie. Dinner and a movie, the Polar Express, will be held at the Salted Rim in Ocean View, Delaware. The restaurant is in a train car decorated for the holiday season.

Sunday, Dec. 7, noon: Pittsburgh distillery tour. Pittsburgh alumni will get together for a tour of the Wigle Whiskey Distillery in the city’s Strip District. The tour will include information on the process of making whiskey and a brief history of Prohibition, and will be followed by lunch.

Thursday, Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m.: DC Alumni Club holiday party. The DC Alumni Club will hold a holiday party at BlackFinn in Washington. Those who bring a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank will receive a free drink.

Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, 1 p.m.: New Castle County family bowling. New Castle County Blue Hens will get together at AMF Prices Lanes on Kirkwood Highway for an afternoon of bowling.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 11:30 a.m.: Maryland Science Center. The Baltimore Alumni Club will host a trip to visit the Maryland Science Center in the Inner Harbor.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m.: Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey. Allentown area alumni will meet for a Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey game at the PPL Center in the city. Social hour will be held at the Allentown Brew Works at 5:30, followed by the game at 7:05 p.m. The Phantoms will take on the St. John’s Ice Caps in an American Hockey League contest.

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by William Noel of the University of Pennsylvania titled “You’ve Got to See It Before You Can Read It: The Archimedes Palimpset and Other Open Data.” Noel is director of the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts and of the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies in the Penn Libraries.

Wednesday, March 11, 4 p.m.: Art history presentations. UD art history graduate student presentations will be moderated by Lauren Petersen, professor and director of graduate studies.

Wednesday, March 25, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Joel Smith, the Richard L. Menschel Curator and head of the Department of Photography at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. Smith will discuss “A Collective Invention: Photography and Its Objects.”

Tuesday, April 14, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Keith Christiansen, chair of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He will speak on the topic “Working from Life in the Age of Caravaggio.”
