Holiday activities include mystery, displays, dinner and a movie

9:32 a.m., Nov. 14, 2014--The holiday season is drawing near and a variety of seasonally themed activities are available to University of Delaware alumni.

Special events include a Murder in Toyland mystery dinner in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, the Symphony of Lights in Maryland, dinner and the movie Polar Express in southern Delaware, and a holiday party for alumni in the Washington, D.C., area.

The University of Delaware's Nii Attoh-Okine recently published a new book with Cambridge University Press, "Resilience Engineering: Models and Analysis."

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

Information on these and other activities follows:

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture series. The Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will continue with a presentation by Alan C. Braddock of the College of William and Mary on “From Nature to Ecology: The Emergency of Ecocritical Art History.”

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6:45 p.m.: Batsheva Dance Co. at Kennedy Center. Alumni are invited to an evening of dance and performance art as the Batsheva Dance Co. performs at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Saturday, Nov. 22, 9 a.m.: Breakfast with Richmond Blue Hens. Alumni are invited to join Blue Hens for breakfast at The Daily on Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia. Those who attend will have a chance to catch up with UD staff, meet fellow alumni and learn about what is happening in Richmond and on campus. 

Saturday, Nov. 22, 10 a.m.: Boston Cradles to Crayons. Boston area Blue Hens will be participating in a service activity at Cradles to Crayons.

Saturday, Nov. 22, noon: Virginia “Forbidden City” exhibition. At the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, alumni can enjoy expert presentations before touring the exhibition “The Forbidden City: Imperial Treasures from the Palace Museum, Beijing.”

Tuesday, Dec. 2, 7-10 p.m.: “Our Lady of Kibeho” at New York’s Signature Theatre. The New York City Alumni Club will host a trip to the Signature Theatre to see Our Lady of Kibeho by award-winning playwright Katori Hall. There will be drinks beforehand and a discussion following.

Saturday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m.: Lancaster mystery dinner. Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area alumni are invited to The Murder in Toyland murder mystery dinner at Bube’s Brewery in Mt. Joy.

Saturday, Dec. 6, 6:45 p.m.: Symphony of Lights. Baltimore area alumni will meet at the Greene Turtle on McGaw Road in Columbia, Maryland, then tour the “Symphony of Lights,” a display of 70 animated and stationary light creations sponsored by Macy’s to raise funds for the Howard County General Hospital.

Sunday, Dec. 7, noon: Kent and Sussex dinner and a movie. Dinner and a movie, the Polar Express, will be held at the Salted Rim in Ocean View, Delaware. The restaurant is in a train car decorated for the holiday season.

Sunday, Dec. 7, noon: Pittsburgh distillery tour. Pittsburgh alumni will get together for a tour of the Wigle Whiskey Distillery in the city’s Strip District. The tour will include information on the process of making whiskey and a brief history of Prohibition, and will be followed by lunch.

Thursday, Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m.: DC Alumni Club holiday party. The DC Alumni Club will hold a holiday party at BlackFinn in Washington. Those who bring a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank will receive a free drink.

Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, 1 p.m.: New Castle County family bowling. New Castle County Blue Hens will get together at AMF Prices Lanes on Kirkwood Highway for an afternoon of bowling.
