'Resilience Engineering'

The University of Delaware's Nii Attoh-Okine recently published a new book with Cambridge University Press, "Resilience Engineering: Models and Analysis."

Reviresco June run

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

Appointments

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has announced several new and continuing appointments: Joann Browning, professor of theatre and senior associate dean for the arts, will be interim deputy dean of CAS while Ann Ardis, professor of English and current deputy dean, serves as interim vice provost for graduate and professional education.

Also, Troy Richards, associate professor of art, has been appointed chair of the renamed Department of Art and Design, for a five-year term beginning in September. Paul Brewer, professor of communication and professor and acting director of the Center for Political Communication, will serve as interim chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations for one year, beginning Sept. 1, while a national search is conducted for a chair to succeed Prof. Gretchen Bauer, who has been appointed faculty director of the Institute of Global Studies’ UD Africa Initiative and has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to work in Ghana next spring. Russell Murray, professor of music and of women and gender studies, will begin serving as chair of the Department of Music on Sept. 1.

In continuing appointments, Louis Rossi, professor of mathematical sciences and of computer and information sciences, has been chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences since January, succeeding John Pelesko, professor of mathematical sciences, who is serving as CAS interim associate dean for the natural sciences.

Campus visit

U.S. Rep. John Carney visited the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes to talk about the University’s ongoing coastal resiliency research and outreach in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) and administered programs as part of a weeklong climate change tour of Delaware.  

Jim Falk and Ed Lewandowski of Delaware Sea Grant presented aspects of coastal resilience as it relates to community economies, highlighting work to assist communities prepare for climate change while maintaining environmental, cultural and economic stability. 

Kevin Brinson, Delaware Environmental Observing System (DEOS), and John Callahan, Delaware Geological Survey (DGS), reviewed general sea level rise projections for Delaware and data from flooding events. They demonstrated tools like the Coastal Flood Monitoring System and DEOS, which integrate real time data with mapping technology to help visualize weather events and flooding. 

Matt Oliver and Mark Moline of CEOE’s School of Marine Science and Policy provided a global perspective on the immediate impacts of climate change. 

Commenting on UD’s research program, Carney said, “I’m very impressed to see the work they’re doing here so we can better understand how to protect Delaware’s coasts. There’s no doubt with the impending effects of climate change, coastal resiliency will play a major part in Delaware’s efforts to protect our communities.”

Sheryl F. Kline, chair of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, was quoted in the May-June issue of Mid-Atlantic Events magazine in an article about the success of the HRIM lodging module program in placing students in hospitality positions upon graduation. The article is on page 29 of the magazine. The lodging module gives students hands-on experience in the Marriott Learning Center at UD’s Courtyard Newark hotel, where William Sullivan serves as managing director.

Presentations

Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Distinguished Professor of History, participated in a panel discussion on “Alcohol and Islam,” an episode in the series Forbidden Talk on the British station Levant TV.

Philip Goldstein, professor emeritus of English, University of Delaware-Wilmington, presented the paper "Reading Toni Morrison’s A Mercy: Modernist Narration and The Critique of Patriarchy" at the American Literature Association conference in Boston, May 21-23. Goldstein also chair a panel on "Mark Twain’s Audiences: Reception Histories and Reconstructed Reading Communities."

Publications

Victor V. Klemas, professor emeritus of marine science and policy in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, co-edited and wrote a chapter on “Remote Sensing of Mangroves” in Remote Sensing of Wetlands: Applications and Advances, CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, Boca Raton, Florida, and New York, pp. 243-264, 2015. Other editors are Ralph W. Tiner and Megan W. Lang.
