May 25-28: Dumpster Detour

Program offers new life for gently used furniture, appliances

TEXT SIZE

8:27 a.m., May 19, 2015--University of Delaware undergraduate students moving out of the residence halls as the semester ends now have another option for discarding unwanted furniture and appliances. They can donate those items to Dumpster Detour, which will be held May 25-28.

An annual project led by Graduate Student Government in cooperation with Housing and Residence Life, Facilities and Grounds, Parking and Transportation Services and the Office of Graduate and Professional Education, Dumpster Detour seeks to divert gently used items from going straight into the dumpster and ending up in a landfill.

Collected items are sorted, catalogued and redistributed to incoming graduate students over the summer, especially those coming from out of state or out of the country who need help getting themselves established in Newark.

Items that can be donated include organizers (laundry hampers and baskets, plastic storage bins and totes, and shelves), appliances (mini-fridges, microwaves, irons and TVs), furniture (lamps, chairs and futons), clothing, bicycles and bed foam.

Collection stations staffed by volunteers will be located near roll-off dumpsters at the Christiana Towers, George Read Hall, Louis Redding Hall, the Rodney Complex, and the Dickinson Complex.

Those who would like to participate can look for signs, like that above, pointing to trucks or tables where donations can be made.

Those who have questions or would like to volunteer can contact Frances Bothfeld at bothfeld@udel.edu.
