Unsung Hero

The One Love Foundation has announced that University of Delaware men's lacrosse standout Elijah Conte has been selected as a winner of the 2016 YRL Unsung Hero Award.

Over 500 competitors are expected to compete in the event. The collegiate division championships will serve as a qualifier for the 2015 USA Taekwondo National Championships in Austin, Texas, and will also serve as the team trials for the 2015 U.S. National Collegiate Taekwondo Team which will represent the United States in July at the Summer World University Games (SWUG) in Gwangju, Korea.

The Delaware Sports Commission, a not-for‐profit organization, was established to attract large and small sporting events to Delaware to benefit the sports industry and community and to positively impact Delaware’s economy.

“We are proud to partner with the UD to welcome the nation’s best taekwondo competitors to Newark,” said Chris Giacomucci, executive director of the Delaware Sports Commission. “This will certainly be a new event for Newark and the University of Delaware campus, but we are excited at the prospects of welcoming so many competitors and their families traveling from out of state to dine on Main Street and patronize local businesses over Easter weekend.”

Formed in 1970, the NCTA works to promote taekwondo in colleges and universities and to create a better understanding of the culture and philosophy of the martial art.

“For the past 40 years, NCTA has been serving as a great pipeline and grassroots development for our national team and Olympic team members,” said Russell Ahn, president of the NCTA. “The National Collegiate Taekwondo Association is excited to be hosting the event at the world class facilities at the University of Delaware.”

The University of Delaware Taekwondo Club, a registered student organization, will assist in co-hosting the event, serving in several volunteer capacities from registration to score keeping. Visit this website for more information about UD Taekwondo.

Competition will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 4, for all color belts. Collegiate black belt will begin on Sunday, April 5, at 9 a.m.

Admission is free to the UD community with valid University ID.
