The open education movement is focused on affordable access to education. It promotes the creation, remix and redistribution of learning materials — for example, videos, podcasts, music, articles, images or textbooks — through open licenses, such as those available through Creative Commons

Open education also promotes the use of Internet resources and social media to take students’ learning experience beyond the classroom walls — to encourage enriching and authentic dialogue while also making educational resources more available globally. Because materials can be more easily accessed and downloaded, the cost of spreading information has become essentially free.

How can UD faculty participate in Open Education Week?

Faculty Commons will host local events to promote open education to UD faculty, staff, and students. Highlights of this year’s events at UD include the following:

  • Tuesday, March 10, 2 p.m.: OER Highlights from the UD Library and Beyond University of Delaware librarians will present on several collections held locally and at other institutions that are freely available for educators to use, remix and share. The presentation will emphasize freely available film resources and digitized collections related to local Delaware history. Presenters will be L. Rebecca Johnson Melvin, librarian and head, Manuscripts and Archives Department, and curator of the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Senatorial Papers; Meghann Matwichuk, associate librarian and coordinator, Film and Video Collection Multimedia Collections and Services Department; Meg Grotti, associate librarian and coordinator, Library Instruction.
  • Friday, March 13, 90 a.m.: Open Education Coffee Hour — Those who want to hear more about open education are invited to attend an informal meeting to bounce ideas around with colleagues and experts while enjoying coffee and baked goods. Moderated by Grotti and Mathieu Plourde, educational technologist, IT Academic Technology Services.
  • March 9-13: Visit the Faculty Commons webpage to see all Open Education Week events being offered throughout the week, and to find links to over 50 free open education webinars in which UD faculty can choose to participate.

Participation in all on-campus and online Open Education Week events is free and open to anyone. For questions about the week’s events or open education in general, contact Faculty Commons at faculty-commons@udel.edu or 302-831-0640.
