Newark Police investigate fatal pedestrian collision on East Delaware Avenue

10:08 a.m., March 8, 2015--Newark Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that happened early Sunday, March 8, at the intersection of South Chapel Street and East Delaware Avenue, Newark.

According to police, Amanda Hagelstein, was walking south with an acquaintance on South Chapel Street and attempted to cross East Delaware Avenue. 

Upon seeing an approaching vehicle, the acquaintance stopped in the roadway, but Ms. Hagelstein began to run and was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling east on Delaware Avenue. She was taken to Christiana Hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the collision. Ms. Hagelstein, 22, of New Castle, was a 2014 graduate of the University of Delaware. 

The vehicle, a 1994 Ford Ranger, left the scene, but the Newark Police Street Crimes Unit was able to locate it a short time later. The driver, Kyle Loyd, 21, of Newark, was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Newark Police Department. Loyd was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, and was released on $5,500 secured bond.

The case remains under investigation by the Newark Police Department Traffic Unit.
