UD's Newark campus is closed Thursday, March 5

5:12 a.m., March 5, 2015--The University of Delaware's Newark campus and UD locations in New Castle County will be closed for the day, beginning at 5 a.m., Thursday, March 5.  Essential personnel should report to work.

Classes will not meet, and offices are closed. Dining halls will operate on their normal schedule.

UD's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes and the Georgetown Campus are also closed March 5.

All UD faculty and staff members are invited to attend the annual UDid It! employee appreciation picnic, set from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, June 6, on The Green.

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

The University is expected to reopen on its normal schedule Friday, March 6. UD Facilities staff will be treating and clearing campus parking lots and sidewalks throughout the day.  

Members of the community are reminded to take care when traveling today.

•  The Associate in Arts Program on the Delaware Technical Community College Terry Campus in Dover will be closed Friday, March 6.

•  Dining Services operations in Perkins Student Center and Trabant University Center are open at 7:30 a.m. today. All other scheduled meetings and events in both locations are canceled March 5.

•  The Independence Fitness Center will be open from noon-7 p.m., March 5.

•  University and Unicity buses are not operating on March 5.

•  The Associate in Arts Program on the Delaware Technical Community College Terry Campus in Dover is closed March 5.

•  The Carpenter Sports Building will be open from 1-8 p.m., March 5. Lap swim and fitness classes are canceled.The rock wall is closed.

•  The Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore and Cafe will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., March 5.

•  The March 5 memorial service for Steven K. Dentel, long-time professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been postponed. The service has been rescheduled for 5 p.m., Monday, March 9, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts. A reception will be held immediately afterward.

•  The March 5 Resident Ensemble Players presentation of Juno and the Paycock has been canceled. The REP box office will be contacting patrons to reschedule them to another performance.

•  The comedy show featuring fan favorites from MTV’s hit shows Girl Code and Guy Code on March 5 has been canceled. SCPAB is working on rescheduling and will provide that information as it becomes available.

•  The Parkinson's Disease: Coping with Depression and Anxiety symposium scheduled for March 5 has been postponed to Thursday, March 12. It will be held from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Health Sciences Complex on UD's Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. Call 302- 831-3195 or go to this website to RSVP. 

•  The presentation by Earl Lewis, president of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, scheduled March 5 as part of the University of Delaware’s Thought Leader Speaker Series, has been postponed due to the pending winter storm. 

•  New Music Delaware's March 5 concert of works by Israeli-American composer Ofer Ben-Amots has been moved to Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts. A further public workshop on Ben-Amots' Odessa Trio will be presented on Friday, March 6, at 2.30 p.m. in the Gore Recital Hall.

Personal safety

Safety is UD's highest priority. Faculty, staff and students should not put themselves at risk, and employees who expect difficulty traveling should contact their supervisors.

Faculty members unable to hold class should notify their departmental offices, and students unable to attend class should contact their professors. In such cases, UD policy states that students should be allowed to make up missed class time and canceled classes should be rescheduled when possible.

The University's policy is reprinted below:

Faculty and students are not expected to take unnecessary risks to meet their teaching and learning obligations due to inclement weather. When classes have not been canceled, it is a matter of personal judgment whether traveling to campus is hazardous. Faculty should notify their departmental offices when weather precludes them from meeting their teaching obligations; similarly, students should notify their professors when inclement weather precludes them from class attendance. In such cases, students should be allowed to make up missed class time and, whenever possible, canceled classes should be rescheduled.
