Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The torch will enter Delaware in Claymont and stop for a brief ceremony outside the Bank of America building on King Street in Wilmington at 12:30 p.m. (the torch will arrive at 12:50), after which the relay will continue through Newark en route to Maryland.

The torch is expected to arrive in Newark at about 2:45 p.m. near the McDonald’s restaurant, then make its way west on Main Street to South College Avenue, where it will turn south and proceed past the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources campus, the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus and the Athletics Complex.

The Newark segment will be on bicycle and the torch will be carried by Special Olympics athlete Elizabeth Nolan and Special Olympics Delaware staff member Mark Wise.

Special Olympics Delaware has offices at the UD Athletics Complex.

The Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America aims to unite the country, increase understanding and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities and create communities of acceptance and inclusion along the way. Delawareans who raised funds for Special Olympics earned the honor of carrying the torch through the state.

In the “unified” spirit of the relay, local Special Olympics athletes will also take part, including three Delaware athletes who will represent the United States at the Special Olympics World Games this summer: Forrie Brown of Wilmington, Danny Yonker of Milford and Robin Long of Newark. In addition, Special Olympics athlete Rick Reusch of New Castle is captain of a segment.
