Awards

David R. Legates, professor in the Department of Geography with research interests in hydroclimatology, precipitation and climate change, and computational methods, received the 2015 Courage in Defense of Science Award from The Heartland Institute at its 10th International Conference on Climate Change held June 11-12 in Washington, D.C. Legates was one of five prominent skeptics of man-caused global warning to be honored during the conference, alongside U.S. Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, professor emeritus William Happer at Princeton University, broadcast meteorologist Anthony Watts and paleontologist, stratigrapher and marine geologist Robert M. Carter. Jean Eckrich, a UD alumna who received a bachelor of science degree in physical education in 1977 and is now professor and chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire, has been presented with the college’s Nancy Beyer Opler Award for Excellence in Advising. The award recognizes a faculty member who is accessible to advisees, makes a meaningful connection with advisees that continues over time, supports advisees in academic and professional planning and facilitates advisees’ adjustment to the community. Eckrich joined Colby-Sawyer in 1995, and her two decades as a faculty member have demonstrated a relentless commitment to the college’s students. She teaches courses in the mechanics and development of human motion, the changing role of women in sports and appropriate principles and practices for coaches.

Two University of Delaware Collegiate FFA members, Anna Garrison and Colby Rash, have won scholarships through the National FFA Organization. Garrison, a sophomore and president of the UD Collegiate FFA, won the Dale Wolf Endowment Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. This award goes to a student pursuing a four-year degree in agricultural education or agricultural sciences. A minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale is required. Preference is given to applicants with local, state or national leadership experience in honor of Dale Wolf’s service as governor and lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware. Rash, a freshman, won America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. This award, presented by the Monsanto Fund, goes to a student pursuing a degree or certification in specific areas of agriculture, chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering, human nutrition, food services, hospitality, communications, marketing, public relations or journalism. Applicants must have strong leadership skills and have participated in community service. A minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required, as are three farmer endorsements.

Presentations

Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Professor of History, presented “The Development of the Historiographical Image of Nader Shah in the Qajar Period,” at the 15th annual conference of the International Qajar Studies Association, in Eijsden, The Netherlands, June 6.
