10:56 a.m., June 15, 2015--As the University of Delaware continues to expand its graduate studies, global reach and online degree options, Michael Alexo takes the reins as director of graduate admissions with experience in all three areas.

Alexo comes to the post after four years as coordinator of conditional admissions at the University’s English Language Institute, where international scholars find support in meeting the University's language requirements and enrolling in undergraduate and graduate studies.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

In his new role at UD, Alexo serves as a key liaison for faculty graduate directors across more than 65 academic departments. His responsibilities include establishing and communicating graduate admissions policy.

"He brings a lot of international experience to the position," said James G. Richards, vice provost for graduate and professional education until Sept. 1, when Ann Ardis, now deputy dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, steps into the role.

About half of UD's more than 7,000 graduate applicants are international students, Richards said, and Alexo brings a valuable understanding of the international landscape. He has traveled extensively on behalf of ELI, including trips to China, Taiwan, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela.

“I am honored to join the office of graduate and professional education and am indebted to the ELI for preparing me for this opportunity,” Alexo said. "Dr. Scott Stevens and the ELI have helped increase the international prominence of the University of Delaware, as evidenced by NAFSA’s 2015 recognition of his Cassandra Pyle Award and the University’s Senator Paul Simon Award for campus internationalization. That international focus will continue in this office.”

Before his work at ELI, Alexo was an independent marketing and information technology contractor with clients including Sony Pictures, QVC and CIGNA.

That background in technology will be valuable as the University expands its online options for graduate and professional degrees, Richards said.

"This is a positive step for the graduate office," Richards said.

Alexo earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University in 1996 and now is pursuing a master's degree in the same field.
