Summer alumni highlights include baseball, send-offs, concert

9:06 a.m., July 11, 2014--Summer highlights for University of Delaware alumni include baseball, send-offs for new Blue Hens and music.

Washington, D.C., area alumni are invited to a concert at Wolf Trap featuring the award-winning a cappella group Straight No Chaser on Thursday, July 17.

Fishery internship

UD senior Mike Canino spent three months studying sockeye and king salmon in Alaska this past summer as an intern with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Renowned scholar

David Tulsky, a renowned expert in outcomes assessment, has joined the faculty in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware to support translational research programs.

Also, there will be special send-offs for members of the incoming Class of 2018 in Washington, New York, south Florida, north New Jersey and Pittsburgh, as well as the popular summer baseball series with games in Reading and Seattle.

Information on these and other alumni activities follows:

Monday, July 14, 8 a.m.: Houston Blue Hens breakfast. Houston area alumni are invited to a morning meal at the Breakfast Klub on Travis Street.

Thursday, July 17, 5:30 p.m.: Alumni Baseball Series/Reading. Alumni in the Reading area are invited to a private party in the LaunchDM Porch followed by Reading Phillies baseball at First Energy Stadium. The Phillies will host the New Britain Rock Cats.

Thursday, July 17, 6 p.m.: Pittsburgh interest meeting. A happy hour and interest meeting for western Pennsylvania Blue Hens will be held on the rooftop of Steel Cactus.

Thursday, July 17, 7 p.m.: Wolf Trap concert. Alumni in the Washington, D.C., area are invited to Wolf Trap for a performance by the award-winning a cappella group Straight No Chaser.

Saturday, July 19, noon: Washington picnic, send-off. An alumni picnic and send-off for new UD students will be held at the Quincy Park picnic shelter in Arlington, Virginia.

Sunday, July 20, 3:30 p.m.: Philadelphia Soul football. Alumni are invited to enjoy a Philadelphia Soul football game at the Wells Fargo Center. The Soul will host the San Jose Sabercats.

Wednesday, July 23, 5:30 p.m.: New York send-off. The New York Alumni Club will host a send-off for the newest Blue Hens.

Thursday, July 24, 6 p.m.: New Castle County painting class. New Castle County alumni can enjoy happy hour and a painting class at Timothy’s on Creek View Road in Newark.

Saturday, July 26, 4 p.m.: South Florida send-off. South Florida alumni will hold a send-off for the newest Blue Hens.

Sunday, July 27, 11:30 a.m.: Alumni Baseball Series/Seattle. Alumni in the Pacific Northwest will gather at Elysian Fields Brewery and later at Safeco Field to watch an American League baseball game between the host Seattle Mariners and the Baltimore Orioles.

Sunday, July 27, noon: DC alumni dinner club. Alumni in the Washington, D.C., area are invited to a dinner club “bottomless brunch” event at the Irish Whiskey Public House.

Sunday, July 27, 1 p.m.: North Jersey picnic, send-off. Alumni in northern New Jersey will hold a picnic to send off the newest Blue Hens at Liberty State Park.

Saturday, Aug. 2, noon: Pittsburgh picnic, send-off. Pittsburgh alumni will hold a new student send-off and a “welcome to the neighborhood” picnic for new Blue Hens in the area at the North Park Perry Pavilion.

Saturday, Aug. 2, 2 p.m.: UD in Dewey Beach event. Kent and Sussex alumni will host an event in Dewey Beach, featuring activities at Ivy, Northbeach and the Bottle and Cork.
