Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

This one-day program covers topics related to the evaluation and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries to the upper and lower extremities. It is recommended for physical therapists, team and family physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, fitness club personnel, and students or school personnel involved in physical education, recreation and physical fitness programs.

Featured topics this year include concussion, ACL reconstruction, hyponatremia, SLAP repair failure and more. An interactive sports taping clinic is a yearly feature of the program.

The seminar director is Keith Handling, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at UD. Presenters include other UD faculty as well as expert practitioners from the region.

This year's presenters from the University's Intercollegiate Athletics Program include sports medicine physician and assistant director of athletics for sports medicine Andrew Reisman, and head strength and conditioning coach Ted Perlak. UD assistant athletic trainers Brandon DeSantis, Nicole Lounsberry and Kelly Stafford, as well as UD graduate teaching assistants Andrea Di Trani and Aaron Struminger, are also presenting.

UD faculty presenters include Thomas Buckley, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, and Airelle Hunter-Giordano, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy as well as associate director of clinical services for UD’s Physical Therapy Clinic.

The athletic training education program at UD has the distinction of being one of the oldest accredited programs in the nation, and the only one in Delaware. The program has been sharing UD's expertise in this field with the region's professionals through the Medical Aspects of Sports seminar for 45 years.

As Handling commented, "The seminar helps area practitioners keep current in the field and maintain their certifications, and gives our students a concrete experience which makes them aware of a very important aspect of the field: the need for continuing professional development for athletic trainers."

The University of Delaware is recognized by the Board of Certification Inc. to offer 8.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to certified athletic trainers for completion of this program. The program is also approved for physical therapy continuing education credits by the Delaware Examining Board of Physical Therapists (0.8 CEUs), Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy (8.0 CEUs) and Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (0.8 CEUs). Physical therapists practicing in other states should contact their state examining board to verify whether this seminar is approved for credit.

The Medical Aspects of Sports seminar is co-sponsored by UD’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program, the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology and the Department of Physical Therapy, in cooperation with the Division of Professional and Continuing Studies
