University Chamber Orchestra presentation of 'The River' postponed

Editor's note: The March 6 presentation of The River has been postponed. A new date will be announced.

9:25 a.m., Feb. 27, 2015--The University of Delaware Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of James Allen Anderson, will present The River at 8 p.m., Friday, March 6, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts.

The lecture-recital program will begin with a panel discussion that will examine the political and ecological atmosphere of the 1930s that led to the creation of the documentary film The River, and how the film score by Virgil Thomson supported the efforts of the administration.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

That will be followed by a screening of the film, with the score performed live by the UD Chamber Orchestra.

Thomson's score for the 1937 Works Progress Administration documentary is in four movements: The Old South, Industrial Expansion in the Mississippi Valley, Soil Erosion and Floods and Finale.

Aaron Copland called the suite a "lesson in how to treat Americana."
