March 20: Norton Lecture
Philosophy professor asks, 'Why worry about future generations?'
8:45 a.m., Feb. 19, 2015--The University of Delaware’s Department of Philosophy will present the spring 2015 David Norton Memorial Lecture at 3:45 p.m., Friday, March 20, in Room 104 Gore Hall.
The lecture, titled “Why Worry About Future Generations?” will be given by Samuel Scheffler, University Professor and professor of philosophy and law at New York University (NYU). The talk is free and open to the public.

Scheffler received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his doctorate from Princeton. Before joining the NYU faculty in 2008, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley from 1977-2008.
His work focuses on areas of moral and political philosophy and he has published five books: The Rejection of Consequentialism; Human Morality; Boundaries and Allegiances; Equality and Tradition; and Death and the Afterlife.
An article, “Distributive Justice, the Basic Structure and the Place of Private Law,” is forthcoming in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies.
Scheffler is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was a recipient of Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships.
He serves as an advisory editor of Philosophy and Public Affairs and has been a visiting fellow of All Souls College in Oxford.
The David Norton Memorial Fund supports this lecture in remembrance of the late UD philosophy professor. The event also is supported by the Makiguchi Foundation, the Class of 1955 Ethics Endowment Fund and the American Philosophical Association.
