IGS, Residence Life and Housing offer international living-learning community
12:35 p.m., Feb. 27, 2015--Continuing this fall, University of Delaware undergraduates will have the opportunity to see the world from within the comforts of their very own home. International House, to be housed in Kent Hall, will bring together international and domestic students to form a living-learning community focused on intercultural dialogue and exchange.
Current students must register for on-campus housing by Saturday, Feb. 28. Students interested in residing in International House should state their preference in the online form.

“In order to create engaged citizens involved in the world around them – a core tenet of the University’s General Education goals – the International House living-learning community provides opportunities to explore new ideas, values, beliefs and experiences,” said Cassie Harrington, residence hall coordinator. “Through these experiences, students can craft their own opinions and engage in constructive conversations to contribute to various communities that they will be members of throughout their lives.”
Residence Life and Housing will offer extended programming and community building, which promotes interaction with the many kinds of diversity present on UD’s campus. Students might engage in the art of Indian dance at Bhangra night, sample exotic foods and games at the International Bazaar, or explore the world through maps and resources in the exclusive Global Library.
The Institute for Global Studies will assist with programming and funding, inviting guests from the Fulbright Program and Peace Corps to engage with residents of the community.
At a Delaware Diplomats mixer Tuesday, Feb. 17, interested students came out to learn more about the program, toured rooms in Kent Hall, and submitted their ideas for a global event.
“I think this is a great opportunity to be exposed to different cultures and experiences without actually having to leave campus,” said Rebecca Pedersen, a freshman triple language major who studied abroad for the first time in Costa Rica this winter.
Other students, like Carson Conlon, a freshman who recently completed his first semester as part of the UD Fall in Rome program, were excited to be a part of such a diverse community on campus.
“It would be nice to meet and live with a range of kids from different places,” Conlon said. “It’s part of what makes UD special -- a large community with students representing so many nations.”
Students are invited to explore the International House online Residence Life and Housing website. Interested students are reminded that they must submit their on-campus housing applications by Saturday, Feb. 28, and should be sure to list International House as their preference.
