UD and Gamesa Technology Corp. joined forces to install a utility-scale, 2 megawatt (2 MW) wind turbine at the University’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. The joint venture’s First State Marine Wind is a partnership between UD-owned Blue Hen Wind and Gamesa, USA.

The wind turbine generates electricity to power UD’s coastal campus, with excess electricity sold for use to the residents of the Town of Lewes. The town is integral to the success of the project because the wind turbine interconnects with the electricity grid managed by Lewes.

In addition to providing clean, carbon-free integration, the wind turbine functions as a research, development and education platform.

A faculty member in the School of Marine Science and Policy and director of the University of Delaware’s interdisciplinary Center for Carbon-free Power Integration, Firestone will talk about his research, which focuses on offshore wind, with emphasis on social acceptance, economics, spatial planning, environmental effects and regulation.

Firestone played a leading role in the development, permitting and construction of the wind turbine located adjacent to the Hugh R. Sharp Campus and his extensive involvement with operations continues to this day.

He recently served on a University working group that reviewed and analyzed the data center and power plant that was proposed to be located on the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus.
