1:28 p.m., Feb. 17, 2015--The University of Delaware’s Faculty Commons is hosting a series of events Feb. 23-27 in Pearson 116 to promote Fair Use Week. Registration is recommended.

The Fair Use Exception to U.S. copyright law allows portions of copyrighted materials to be used without permission of the copyright owner, notably in certain teaching, scholarly and research situations. However, the exact context in which these materials are used, and in what manner they have been altered, determines the legality of using copyrighted materials.
The UD events for Fair Use Week will inform the University community about how these issues are central to the use of teaching materials. The events, to be held at Faculty Commons, 116 Pearson Hall, include
- “Celebrating Fair Use Week: Does Fair Use really Work?” Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2-3:30 p.m., an Association of College and Research Libraries webcast featuring Kevin Smith, director, Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke University Libraries.
- “Copyright Clarity for the College Community: A Review of Renee Hobbs Copyright Research,” Thursday, Feb. 26, 10-11:30 a.m., a discussion about how fair use supports digital learning led by Mathieu Plourde, IT Academic Technology Services.
- An open-ended discussion about fair use led by UD Librarian and Scholarly Communication Officer Cathy Wojewodzki. Friday, Feb. 27, from 9-10 a.m.
During Open Education Week, March 9-13, Faculty Commons will be hosting several other copyright-related events, promoting the free and open sharing of educational resources and thereby encouraging equitable access to knowledge.
Both of these series of presentations are presented in Faculty Commons with the support of the University of Delaware Library and IT Academic Technology Services,
A list of these and other events can be found on the Faculty Commons Calendar.
