TEXT SIZE

9:37 a.m., Dec. 16, 2014--The University of Delaware Research Office and the Office of Graduate and Professional Education have announced a one-day training session in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Trabant University Center.

This training provides an overview of the basic rules and principles that apply to the responsible conduct of research, from ethical considerations in performing research, to requirements associated with the use of human subjects or animals, financial management of research funding, laboratory safety, export controls and conflicts of interest.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

Additional topics to be covered include authorship in the scholarly communication of research results and research-related intellectual property issues.

Who is required to attend?

All members of the UD research community are encouraged and welcome to participate. In addition, several federal funding agencies have distinct requirements as to who needs to complete RCR training:

• Per the National Science Foundation (NSF), undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers receiving NSF funding to perform research are required to complete RCR training.

• Under National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy, RCR instruction is to be completed by all trainees, fellows and scholars receiving NIH support through any NIH training, career development award (individual or institutional), research education grant and dissertation research grant. Training should be taken at least once during each career stage and at a frequency of no less than every four years.

• It is the responsibility of each faculty member and principal investigator (PI) to ensure that all personnel funded in their project(s) and required to complete RCR training do so in a timely manner.

Attendance at the one-day RCR session will be tracked by scanning the UD ID card of each attendee at different times throughout the day. Participation of graduate students is noted as a completed non-credit course on their transcript.

Pre-registration is required and may be completed at this website. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the session. Registration will close on Jan. 29.

Online training

Online training also is available throughout the year at this site for all those required to fulfill instruction in RCR and not able to attend an in-person session. To successfully complete training, individuals must achieve a passing grade for all modules of at least 85 percent overall.

Once all required modules are completed through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website, a completion report and a copy are automatically sent to the Research Office. More information about the RCR options at UD can be found on the Research website.

Departments are asked to disseminate this announcement to the appropriate faculty, staff and students in their units. Questions about the RCR training should be directed to Maria Palazuelos at 302-831-8619 or mariapj@udel.edu.
