11:40 a.m., Dec. 5, 2014--Tuesday evening at the Trabant University Center, Provost Domenico Grasso led a second open-format, town hall meeting with the University of Delaware community. The first was held earlier this fall on Oct. 8.

All students, faculty and staff were invited to meet with the provost to ask questions, share ideas and learn about the future of UD.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

After brief introductory remarks by Grasso, during which he highlighted the University’s commitment to excellence, the town hall touched on a variety of topics, including the strategic planning process and the steady decline of “serious crimes on campus by 36 percent, despite the increased frequency of UD alerts.”

The discussion also covered online learning, the events in Ferguson, Missouri, and the need for greater campus and classroom dialogue around race, diversity and inclusion.

“The truth is that the issues we’ve watched play out in Ferguson have existed long before this most recent tragic chapter in our nation’s struggles around fairness, equity, and inclusion,” Grasso said afterward.

“Try as we might, life in this country is, nonetheless, inherently different for people based on race. I am a bit loath to use the term race in this way because, as Toni Morrison has said so eloquently, we are all part of the same race — the human race.”
