Exchange of ideas

Message to the University of Delaware Community

4:55 p.m., Dec. 5, 2014--University of Delaware President Patrick T. Harker sent the following message to members of the University community today.

December 5, 2014

To All Members of the University Community:

Over recent days, many of us across the campus have joined the millions across the nation in struggling to understand and respond to the news emerging from Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and elsewhere.

This week, two peaceful, thought-provoking events were held here at UD that involved students, faculty and staff from across the institution. I applaud all those who participated for demonstrating once again our commitment to being the place for open discussion, for exchange of ideas and for inquiry, all based on respect for diverse views and values.

These discussions can be difficult and challenging, but ultimately there is no better location for them than a college campus, where we are dedicated to providing that safe space for intellectual exchange—a space where everyone can feel welcome and empowered to speak.

Frank and open discussions can only happen when there is respect for each other and when we treat one another with dignity. I was saddened to learn that the thoughtful demonstrations here were marred by racist remarks on an anonymous social media website. Members of our community can and should feel free to express differing opinions, but racist language is never appropriate. Such hurtful actions demean us all.

Please know that many on our campus are working every day to make a difference in our world: to promote diversity, acceptance and inclusion at UD and across the nation.

For the coming year, I have asked that our leadership team consider ways we can foster open dialog and discussion across the campus on the important issue of race in America. I look to every member of our community to consider ways we can explore this topic together. This will require a sustained effort from all of us, but I have confidence that we are up to the challenge.

Sincerely,

Patrick T. Harker

President
