Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Activities at the University of Delaware Library event included:

  • 8-bit Orchestra, a registered student organization (RSO), played their own arrangements of music from popular video games, including Kirby, Portal 2, Street Fighter and Mario.
  • Phillip Penix-Tadsen, assistant professor of Spanish, spoke about “the diverse and pervasive portrayal of Latin American culture in Grand Theft Auto V.” Penix-Tadsen organized his talk around a live, critical play through of the game.
  • Troy Richards, associate professor of art, explored the artistic value of indie games, with examples from Gorogoa, Papers Please and Braid.
  • Ryan Keeley, president of the Computer Animation and Game Design RSO, demonstrated current projects that students are working on in that group and gave the audience a sneak peak for the RSO’s end of the year event called CAGDStravaganza.
  • The Board Game Club RSO and local game store, The Days of Knights, ran a board and card game room with many different games to play.
  • Mica Corradin (The Days of Knights), Deavon Church (library) and Galedrim (RSO) helped organize tabletop role-playing games.
  • The Video Game Tournament Club RSO brought three Wii U consoles running Mario Kart 8 at the Student Multimedia Design Center’s Group Link Tables.
  • Film and Video Collection had open gaming on their PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and N64 consoles, and library staff members were on hand to suggest and circulate games from the collection.
  • The library participated in a Global Game of Gossip where a single secret traveled around the world. The secret phrase started in Australia and traveled from time zone to time zone through more than 30 countries and territories around the world, and finished in the United States over 24 hours later.

This event was organized by Nico Carver, assistant librarian and coordinator of Student Multimedia Design Center Services in the Multimedia Collections and Services Department, and would not have been possible without the help and assistance of many people in the library including:

  • Deavon Church, computing support specialist II in the Library Information Technology User Support Department.
