Holiday parties planned by alumni in Washington, New York City

9:05 a.m., Dec. 5, 2014--With the winter holiday season fast approaching, University of Delaware alumni in Washington, D.C., and New York City are planning festive celebrations.

The DC Alumni Club will hold a holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 11, at BlackFinn in Washington, with those who attend encouraged to bring a donation for the Capital Area Food Bank.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

In New York City, the Black Alumni Organization invites Blue Hens to gather on Friday, Dec. 12, at American Whiskey.

Information on these and other activities follows:

Thursday, Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m.: DC Alumni Club holiday party. The DC Alumni Club will hold a holiday party at BlackFinn in Washington. Those who bring a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank will receive a free drink.

Friday, Dec. 12, 3 p.m.: New York holiday party. The Black Alumni Organization and other area Blue Hens will celebrate the holidays with a party at American Whiskey, 247 W. 30th St., one block from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, 1 p.m.: New Castle County family bowling. New Castle County Blue Hens will get together at AMF Prices Lanes on Kirkwood Highway for an afternoon of bowling.

Wednesday, Jan. 21, 6 p.m.: New Castle County Alumni Club. The New Castle County Alumni Club will hold an open board meeting at Santa Fe, 2006 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington. Blue Hens can share thoughts and ideas as the club makes plans for 2015.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 11:30 a.m.: Maryland Science Center. The Baltimore Alumni Club will host a trip to visit the Maryland Science Center in the Inner Harbor.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 5:30 p.m.: Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey. Allentown area alumni will meet for a Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey game at the PPL Center in the city. Social hour will be held at the Allentown Brew Works at 5:30, followed by the game at 7:05 p.m. The Phantoms will take on the St. John’s Ice Caps in an American Hockey League contest.

Thursday, Jan. 29, 6:30 p.m.: Bocce ball in New York. The New York City Alumni Club will offer bocce ball night in Brooklyn’s Union Hall.

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by William Noel of the University of Pennsylvania titled “You’ve Got to See It Before You Can Read It: The Archimedes Palimpset and Other Open Data.” Noel is director of the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts and of the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies in the Penn Libraries.

Wednesday, March 11, 4 p.m.: Art history presentations. UD art history graduate student presentations will be moderated by Lauren Petersen, professor and director of graduate studies.

Wednesday, March 25, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Joel Smith, the Richard L. Menschel Curator and head of the Department of Photography at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. Smith will discuss “A Collective Invention: Photography and Its Objects.”

Tuesday, April 14, 5:30 p.m.: Art history lecture. The UD Art History Graduate Student Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Keith Christiansen, chair of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He will speak on the topic “Working from Life in the Age of Caravaggio.”
