Colburn Laboratory fire confined to first floor electrical room

3:06 p.m., Aug. 29, 2014--A fire in the University of Delaware’s Colburn Laboratory that occurred shortly before 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, has been extinguished. 

The building, located on Academy Street, was evacuated and will be closed for another 3-4 hours due to smoke, according to UD Police.

A substantial amount of smoke remained in the building after the fire was extinguished, and large exhaust fans are being used in the clean-up.

Police said the fire was confined to an electrical room on the first floor but the smoke spread throughout the building.

The fire appears to have started in a computer rack.
