Hearing expert to give free talks prior to Xiang Gao's iMusic concerts

8:29 a.m., April 16, 2015--The University of Delaware Master Players Concert Series has announced special pre-concert presentations by internationally recognized hearing specialist Dr. Michael Teixido prior to the iMusic VIII world premiere of CSI: Beethoven, A Chamber Music Play on Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, in Mitchell Hall.

Teixido will discuss the famed composer’s hearing loss at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, when the concert will start at 8, and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, when the concert will begin at 3. The presentations will be held on the Mitchell Hall stage and are free.

CSI: Beethoven, A Chamber Music Play marks the season finale of the 2014-15 Master Players Concert Series and also launches a new tradition in the pre-concert talk. 

The concert, performed and produced by Master Players founding artistic director Xiang Gao and friends, explores the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven by delving into mysteries surrounding his deafness and death while drawing from music spanning his compositional career. The production is co-directed by innovative creator and playwright Didi Balle. To learn more about this concert, click here

The pre-concert talk by Teixido will explore in broad strokes the universe of sound in the world and the relation of species to sound by discussing the mechanism of hearing and sound processing, as well as the effects of hearing loss.

Those who attend the presentation and the iMusic concert following will find they are informed in a way that will enhance their appreciation of the drama that unfolds, Gao said.

About Michael Teixido

Michael Teixido is a native of Wilmington Delaware. He completed his residency in otolaryngology at Loyola University of Chicago in 1990 and continued his training with a sub-specialization in neurotology (neurology and neurosurgery of ear problems) at Northwestern University, Southern Illinois University and the University of Chicago.

Since 1991 he has been in neurotologic practice at Christiana Care Health System and Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children where, in addition to his clinical practice, he continues his academic activity with clinical appointments at Thomas Jefferson University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  

Teixido founded the Delaware Otologic Medicine and Surgery Fellowship in 2006. He directs the Balance and Mobility Center at Christiana Care and is active in adult and pediatric cochlear implantation. He is a member of numerous professional societies related to otology and neurotology, regularly presents nationally and internationally and holds numerous editorial board positions. 

Teixido has been active in overseas medicine, has developed surgical instruments and prostheses and has developed teaching materials used by patients and physicians worldwide. 

He has a special interest in cochlear implantation, superior canal dehiscence syndrome, balance disorders, in migraine in otolaryngology and in 3D imaging of anatomy for teaching and visualization. 

He has contributed over 30 peer-reviewed publications to the medical literature.
