8:04 a.m., April 7, 2015--For families interested in enrolling preschoolers and kindergartners in a high quality program, the University of Delaware’s Laboratory Preschool has announced openings in its 2015-16 full day pre-k/kindergarten program (ages 4-6) and in its afternoon preschool program (ages 2-4).

In its 80th year of operation, the Laboratory Preschool provides an active play-based curriculum in an inclusive and multicultural environment. Every aspect of the program is designed to respect and respond to the individual strengths, interests and needs of each child.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“The environment at the Laboratory Preschool is nurturing, happy, and highly conducive both to learning as well as personal growth,” said a parent of a recent kindergartner. “Our son loves going to school. The staff-to-student ratio is such that he receives instruction and opportunities for socialization that are specifically structured to meet his needs, while challenging him to achieve. ”

Young learners engage in interactive age-appropriate lessons designed to incite their curiosity. They might:

  • explore the wonders of nature by visiting the wetland areas and streams along the adjacent James Hall Trail.
  • develop math and science skills by counting and recording the non-native plants encroaching on the school playground.
  • master an engineering challenge by constructing functional bridges.

This winter, students in Laura Morris’ pre-k/kindergarten class designed an 18-foot model of Newark’s Main Street as part of their social studies curriculum

“Students visited the local businesses, studied their evolution through photos and created representations of the buildings,” Morris explained. “The curriculum integrated literacy, math, art, history and even social/emotional development while emphasizing how ‘community’ starts in the classroom and ripples outward into the larger society.”

Thoughtfully planned experiences and carefully supported interactions among children and adults provide youngsters the knowledge and skills necessary to help them succeed in the years that follow.

“The Laboratory Preschool had a significant impact on my children's lives that has not been lost with time,” said a parent of three former students, now ages 6, 8 and 10. “My children would head off to school interested in constantly changing topics such as construction sites, insects or castles. Literacy, math, science and other content areas were addressed through the activities in a way that was very child-centered. What I loved most was the special connections they made with each of my children and our family.”

The Laboratory Preschool is located at 459 Wyoming Road, Newark, one of three facilities on the College of Education and Human Development’s children’s campus.
