In her book, Miles, who earned her doctorate in English at UD in 2001, covers the days leading up to and immediately following the powerful storm that hit the East Coast of the U.S. in 2012.
She takes readers into the maelstrom, detailing the stories of the dedicated professionals at the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service, the forecaster who risked his job to sound the alarm in New Jersey, the crew of the ill-fated tall ship Bounty, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New Jersey Gov. Christie, who also is a UD alumnus, and countless coastal residents whose lives were turned upside down by the storm.
Miles grew up in the Midwest and received her bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1996. She began her writing career as a cub reporter covering local oddities like Zamboni drivers, pumpkin chunkers and barge captains.
Miles continues to dedicate herself to uncovering previously ignored narratives and characters. In addition to Superstorm, she is the author of All Standing (Simon and Schuster, 2011) and Adventures With Ari (Skyhorse, 2009).
Her work has appeared in dozens of publications including Best American Essays, Between Song and Story, Ecotone, History, How To Write About Anything, Outside, Popular Mechanics and The New York Times.
Miles currently serves as writer-in-residence for Green Mountain College and as a faculty member for Chatham University’s low-residency master of fine arts program. She is also a scholar-in-residence for the Maine Humanities Council and a member of the Terrain.org editorial board. She lives with her family in Portland, Maine.
