Haven to present renowned LGBTQ advocate Ash Beckham

8:05 a.m., April 20, 2015--Ash Beckham, a renowned LGBTQ advocate and orator, will speak from 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, in the University of Delaware’s Trabant University Center lounge.

The presentation is sponsored by Haven, the LGBTQ student organization at UD.

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Beckham will discuss the power of empathy, respect and conversation. 

As a lesbian woman, she has faced numerous trials related to her identity, but she maintains that everyone has their own closets to come out of. 

"Hard is hard," she said in one TED Talk, whether someone is coming out of the closet, revealing that they are about to declare bankruptcy or reporting a sexual assault. 

Beckham challenges audiences to think about the struggles of others and to have respectful conversations about them.
