Rice University's Halas to discuss opportunities in emerging technologies

11:48 a.m., April 2, 2015--The University of Delaware Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has announced that Naomi Halas of Rice University will deliver the next talk in its Distinguished Lecture Series at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, in Mitchell Hall.

Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice, will speak on the topic “Plasmon-Enabled Processes: New Opportunities in Cross-Cutting Science and Emerging Technologies.”

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Halas is the founding director of the Laboratory for Nanophotonics at Rice University and a pioneer in the field of plasmonics, creating the concept of the “tunable plasmon” and inventing nanoparticles with resonances spanning the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum.

She is author of more than 250 refereed publications, has more than 15 issued patents and has been cited more than 30,000 times. 

She is co-founder of both Nanospectra Biosciences, developing photothermal therapies for cancer and other diseases, and Eureka Sun, commercializing nanoparticle-based solar steam generation. 

Halas is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the 2014 American Physical Society Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids. 

A reception will follow the talk in the DuPont Hall lobby.
