May 5-6: Title IX focus groups

Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights to conduct focus groups on Title IX

10:18 a.m., April 29, 2015--The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) will visit the University of Delaware’s Newark campus on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 5 and 6, to hold focus group sessions on issues related to sexual harassment and sexual violence. In addition to meetings tailored to specific groups, representatives from OCR will be available to speak privately with anyone about these issues.

Members of the University community are encouraged to attend the session most appropriate to them.

Following are additional details provided by OCR:

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is currently reviewing the University’s compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendment Acts of 1972, which is the federal law that prohibits sexual harassment.  Sexual violence, including rape, is a form of sexual harassment.  

Representatives from OCR will be on campus on Tuesday, May 5, and Wednesday, May 6, to conduct focus group sessions in conversation with the campus community on issues related to sexual harassment and sexual violence. OCR will also be available to speak privately with anyone regarding these issues, including with anyone who is a survivor of sexual violence or sexual harassment.

OCR’s schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, May 5, 2015, Multipurpose Room B, Trabant University Center: 

10 a.m.:  University faculty

11 a.m.:  University staff

1 p.m.:  Resident assistants

2 p.m.:  Student Government Association and campus leaders 

3 p.m.:  Members of organizations addressing issues of interest to women

4 p.m.:  Individual meetings with OCR. Please call one of the OCR representatives below to schedule a private meeting.  Walk-ins are also welcome.

Wednesday, May 6, 2015, Ewing Room, Perkins Student Center:

10 a.m.:  University undergraduate and graduate students

11 a.m.:  Individual meetings with OCR.  Please call one of the OCR representatives below to schedule a private meeting.  Walk-ins are also welcome.

1 p.m.:  Members of sororities

2 p.m.:  Members of fraternities

3 p.m.:  Individual meetings with OCR.  Please call one of the OCR representatives below to schedule a private meeting.  Walk-ins are also welcome.
