Biden recognizes UD Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team
9:04 a.m., Sept. 20, 2013--The University of Delaware Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team has received a congratulatory letter from Vice President Joe Biden, a UD alumnus.
Biden and his wife Jill, also a UD graduate, offered their congratulations to the team on it win at the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Intercollegiate Championships that took place at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
Biden applauded the skaters on the commitment and perseverance that led to their victory and expressed his support for the team in their future competitions.
The letter will be framed and kept in the trophy case in the Fred Rust Arena next to the Championship Cup.
The Championship Cup is extremely important to the skaters at UD, a team representative said, because they overcame great odds at the national intercollegiate championships to bring the national title back to Delaware.
At the end of the first day of the competition, the team was down by 35 points. However, UD’s skaters were able to rally the next day and were neck and neck with Dartmouth College leading up to the final event of the competition.
At the end of the day, the results revealed that Delaware had overcome Dartmouth by five points and had won the title.
Excellence in figure skating has been a longstanding tradition at the University of Delaware, the representative said, as the team has never placed below third at a national championship event.
The team skates together one morning a week and practices individually at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on South Campus. Many of the skaters have prestigious individual skating careers, some having competed at the U.S. figure skating sectional and national championships, as well as internationally.
The team works together to create a strong, supportive skating environment that fosters good sportsmanship, the representative said.
The team “was honored to receive such prestigious recognition” and “is looking forward to honoring Vice President Biden’s best wishes as we begin the season this November at the Cornell University Intercollegiate Competition,” the representative said.
