DENIN internships

Undergrads invited to apply for DENIN research opportunities by Oct. 11

9:02 a.m., Sept. 13, 2013--The Delaware Environmental Institute has announced that it will sponsor up to 20 paid undergraduate research internships focused on environmental topics during the 2013-14 academic year.

The purpose of the undergraduate research opportunity is to provide interested students with a sustained research experience over the academic year. Internships will be carried out during the fall, winter and spring semesters, beginning on or about Nov. 1. Fall and spring semesters are a part-time commitment, while Winter Session is considered a full-time commitment for five weeks. Interns will receive a total stipend of $4,250.

Research Stories

Research scholars

The McNair Scholars Program at UD recently hosted its 12th annual research competition and graduate fair, with students awarded prizes for outstanding presentations in science and social science.

Biomedical grant opportunities

Two of UD's NIH Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) programs have issued calls for grant applications from UD researchers. Proposals are due by Nov. 14.

University of Delaware undergraduates from any major may apply; however, the focus of the research must be environmentally relevant. Students with an interest in climate, sea level rise, water quality, land use, soil contamination/remediation, environmental sensing/monitoring, economics, ethics or environmental justice, history or policy are especially encouraged to apply.

Students will work with mentors at UD who have agreed to provide a research experience, but they should also be comfortable working independently. They will present the results of their work in spring 2014.

“We expect students to identify a research topic and faculty mentor on their own before they apply,” said Jeanette Miller, associate director of DENIN. “But we have provided some tips and resources in the application packet to help students identify and make contact with appropriate faculty.”

All applicants are required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must be current sophomores, juniors or seniors. Applications are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11. For complete information or to download application materials, visit the DENIN Environmental Scholars webpage.
