Deputy Athletic Director Samantha K. Huge to take on new responsibilities as special assistant to the president

6:49 a.m., Sept. 11, 2013--University President Patrick Harker announced today that he has asked Deputy Athletic Director Samantha K. Huge to take on added responsibilities and to assume the additional title of special assistant to the president.

Effective immediately, Huge’s title will be deputy director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services and special assistant to the president. Huge will be responsible for managing special projects involving athletics, development, legal and regulatory compliance, and facilities planning.

“The President’s Office is fortunate to have someone like Samantha to provide extra support as we plan for the future of athletics and recreation at UD,” Harker said. “Samantha did a superb job as interim athletic director last year, and she brings an unusual blend of hands-on experience and vision to the President’s Office.”

Athletics Director Eric Ziady added, “Samantha has made many contributions to the success of UD Athletics over the years.  We look forward to her added role as we all strive to improve the student athlete experience and build upon the history and tradition of Blue Hens Athletics.”

A member of the University of Delaware athletics and recreation services staff since 2009, Huge is currently in her third year as deputy director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services. She has served as a member of the division’s senior management team and in addition to the oversight of several sport programs, has been responsible for the day-to-day business and administrative operations of the division, including external operations, fiscal management, capital projects, and NCAA compliance.  

She is a former member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and of the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse Advisory Group. Prior to her appointment at the University of Delaware, Huge held senior administrative positions in the athletics departments at Wake Forest University and Georgetown University. She also served in the athletics compliance offices of the Southern Conference, the University of Illinois and Michigan State University. 

Huge graduated in 1992 from Gordon College, where she played varsity basketball for four years. She earned her law degree from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in North Carolina in 1997.
