9:21 p.m., Sept. 15, 2013--Newark Police have arrested Xavier White, 21, of New Castle, for discharging a firearm during an early morning incident Sept. 14 in the parking lot of 54 East Delaware Ave.

During this incident, Newark Police and UD Police responded to the area of the Galleria after a report of a man with a gun who had fled the area in a red vehicle.

A UD Police officer saw a vehicle matching the description fail to stop at a red light on East Main Street and South College Avenue. The vehicle continued southbound on South College Avenue and then eastbound on East Delaware Avenue. The UD officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop and continued east on East Delaware Avenue. The UD officer was joined by a Newark officer and after a short distance, the vehicle stopped in the vicinity of Scholar Drive. Officers immediately placed the driver, later identified as White, into custody. A semiautomatic handgun was located in the vehicle.

Police determined that White was involved in an earlier altercation at 45 East Main St., after which he retrieved a handgun from his vehicle. White then walked through the interior corridor of 45 East Main St. to the rear parking lot, located at 54 East Delaware Ave. Once in the parking lot, police said White raised the gun and fired two rounds in a southeasterly direction, striking an unoccupied parked car in the parking lot behind the Newark United Methodist Church. White then returned to his vehicle and fled.

No one was injured during this incident, which was captured, in its entirety, on city of Newark surveillance video.

After his detention at the traffic stop, White was taken to Newark Police headquarters where he was arrested and charged with first degree reckless endangering, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, disregarding a police officer’s signal, criminal mischief under $1,000 and failure to stop at a red light.

He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $44,500 secured bail.
