Delaware Cardiovascular Research Center sets symposium Oct. 11


8:23 a.m., Sept. 13, 2013--The Delaware Cardiovascular Research Center (DCRC) will hold its third annual symposium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 654 South College Ave., Newark.

The symposium will bring together cardiovascular researchers from tri-state area institutions to share recent advances in the field and to facilitate productive collaborations through idea sharing and the development of an infrastructure for cardiovascular disease education and research.

Goose camp

Chris Williams leads a UD research team that is studying the Atlantic brant goose in Canada's Hudson Bay region.

Plastic in the ocean

UD oceanographer Tobias Kukulka reports evidence that the amount of plastic in the marine environment may be greater than previously thought.

The morning keynote speaker will be Edward Lakatta, senior investigator and chief of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science at the National Institute on Aging. Lakatta is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in cardiovascular research. He holds adjunct appointments as professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and professor in the  Cardiology Division at John Hopkins School of Medicine.

The afternoon keynote speaker will be Mortimer Poncz, division chief of hematology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine University of Pennsylvania. Poncz is a nationally and internationally known expert in the filed of  hemostasis and thrombosis and was the associate editor of Blood

There will also be presentations by invited faculty from the University of Delaware, the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University, Nemours Research Center and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

In addition, there will be a poster session featuring work by UD scientists, graduate students and outside presenters. Several awards for outstanding posters will be presented.
