UD finishes third in Delmarva's Summer Blood Challenge

10:37 a.m., Oct. 7, 2013--A total of 325 University of Delaware faculty, staff, retirees, alumni and friends donated blood products during the Blood Bank of Delmarva’s Summer Blood Challenge, which ran from May 20-Sept. 14.

The University was one of 17 organizations that went head-to-head in friendly competition in the extra-large employer category and earned a third place finish for highest participation rate at an awards banquet which was held at Dover Downs on Sept. 26.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children came in second place and the category was won by Bayhealth Medical Center Inc.

This was the 11th annual Summer Blood Challenge, which helps help prevent summer blood shortages in the region. Donation rates increased 14 percent over a similar period last year.

University employees may become members of the Blood Bank of Delmarva free of charge as part of their voluntary benefits package. 

The next major opportunity to donate blood on the Newark campus will be during the CAA Blood Challenge on Wednesday, Nov. 13. UD won the 2012 challenge and is seeking 1,500 donors this year.
