'ABCs of LGBT'
UD's LGBT Ally Program offers awareness workshop April 7
1:55 p.m., March 21, 2014--The University of Delaware’s LGBT Ally Program in the Office of Equity and Inclusion will hold a workshop on the “ABCs of LGBT” from 1-2 p.m., Monday, April 7, in Room 261 of 413 Academy Street.
The one-hour workshop is designed to provide a foundation of information for those who want to learn more or to become and ally. It is also a handy refresher for current allies.
Housing application opens Sept. 1
It will answer questions about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and about other terms participants might have heard used, such as pansexual and queer.
“Learning the ever-changing vocabulary in the LGBT community is a great way to start one's journey in becoming an ally,” notes Becki Fogerty, director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion. This notion is true in many circumstances, also for allies to the LGBT community. “Words are powerful, and knowing what the words mean can be the difference between understanding and offending."
This workshop is unique because it is provided by LGBT Allies who are using the knowledge they have gained in ally training and passing it along to their colleagues. The program, whose population has grown 169 percent in the last year, includes an intensive training and continued opportunities for the allies to network and keep skills fresh, all while advocating for the LGBT community at UD.
