12:19 p.m., June 26, 2014--The city of Newark will hold its Liberty Day celebration and fireworks display from 6-9 p.m., Friday, July 4, at the University of Delaware’s David M. Nelson Athletic Complex on South College Avenue.

The annual Independence Day celebration -- featuring live entertainment, food, arts and crafts, and games -- is expected to draw approximately 18,000 people while the fireworks will be viewed by an estimated 40,000 people in the area.

April 18-19: iMusic VIII concert

The Master Players Concert Series will present "CSI: Beethoven, A Chamber Music Play" as part of the iMusic VIII presentation to be held Saturday evening, April 18, and Sunday afternoon, April 19, in Mitchell Hall.

April 20: Confucianism lecture

Peimin Ni, a leading scholar on Confucianism, will be the featured speaker in the eighth China Forum Lecture to be held at 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 20, in 205 Kirkbride Hall.

Live musical entertainment will begin at 6 p.m., with The Reunion taking the stage. The Juggling Hoffmans will perform at 7:15 p.m. and Club Phred at 7:45 p.m.

Fireworks will begin at dusk.

Free parking will be available in the UD athletic complex lots. 

City officials advise that pets should be left at home and secured safely during the fireworks display because fireworks tend to scare many pets and many animals are lost during Independence Day celebrations.

The rain date is Saturday, July 5, with fireworks only.

If there is questionable weather, call the city’s leisure time hotline at 302-366-7147 for rain date information or cancellation.

For additional information, call the Newark Parks and Recreation Office at 302-366-7060. Note that municipal offices and Alderman's Court will be closed on July 4.
