11:32 a.m., July 29, 2013--New Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones have been deployed on the University of Delaware’s main campus in Newark.

The new VoIP phones, manufactured by Cisco, bring a technology change to UD that allows for a more sustainable and more easily maintained campus-wide telecommunications system than the existing copper-line Centrex system.

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

Over the next three weeks, deployment of new VoIP phones will proceed to UD’s campuses in the following order: Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown and Lewes.

A team from the firm Dimension Data, the approved UD vendor in charge of the deployment, will continue to set up the new VoIP phones on the remote campuses.

Visit the VoIP website for more details, including a list of buildings in the remote campus deployment.

Telephone Services reminds the University community to read the VoIP website for details on this extensive technology upgrade, which includes an initial “like for like” replacement of old to new phones.

If a department currently has a conference phone, it will be replaced with a VoIP conference phone. Existing headsets will be upgraded with an adapter to work with the new VoIP phone.

Until the entire campus is “cut over” to the new VoIP phone service in mid-August, it is important to remember:

  • Existing Centrex phone service continues in its entirety, handling incoming calls, outgoing calls and voice mail.
  • New VoIP phones will only function for outgoing calls and voice mail for calls received from other VoIP phones.
  • Upon receipt of your new phone, look on the back or bottom of the phone to see what model number you have (e.g., 3905, 6961, etc.). Specific training resources for each model VoIP phone are on the VoIP website
  • Once you have your new VoIP phone, read the instructions on the VoIP website for setting up your new voice mailbox. This is an entirely new voice mail system and does not tie into the existing voice mail system.

Telephone Services assures everyone that unique telephone needs will be resolved.
