4:57 p.m., Jan. 27, 2014--The city of Newark is asking its customers to voluntarily conserve electricity on Tuesday, Jan. 28, on behalf of PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for more than 61 million people in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

The request, being made throughout the area served by PJM, is prompted by another wave of frigid weather that will mean an increased demand for electricity. The demand and the need for conservation are expected to be the highest Tuesday evening.

ARTstor workshop

The University of Delaware Library will present a workshop titled "Teaching and Learning with Images: Introduction to ARTstor" on Tuesday, April 14.

Customers are asked to conserve energy, if health permits, particularly from 6-10 a.m. and from 5-9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Taking a few simple steps can help maintain the power grid throughout the region:

• Set thermostats lower that usual, if health permits.

• Turn off electric lights and appliances that are not needed or being used.

• Postpone using major electric appliances, such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers until mid-day or after 9 p.m., when the demand for electricity decreases.

• Gather in a central room where you have alternative heat. At night, cover windows with drapes or blankets to minimize heat loss. During the day, open blinds to let sun warm the space.

Conserving electricity will help ensure adequate power supplies and will reduce the need for more drastic measures, such as electricity curtailments. The city will continue to carefully monitor power supply conditions and its relationship with the Delaware Municiapal Electric Corp. Inc. (DEMEC) and PJM to avoid curtailing electricity.
