Newark street closings announced for Reindeer Run and Romp
12:05 p.m., Dec. 6, 2013--The city of Newark has announced that due to inclement weather its annual Winterfest celebration has been rescheduled from Friday, Dec. 6, to Saturday, Dec. 7.
The event will be held from 6-8 p.m, Saturday on the lawn of the University of Delaware’s Academy Building at Main and Academy streets.
Food Bank boost
Still scheduled for Friday evening, Special Olympics Delaware will hold its annual Reindeer Run and Romp. The 5-kilometer race and walk will start at 7 p.m. at Delaware Avenue and Academy Street. For details on the Reindeer Run and Romp, click here.
Because of the race, UD Parking Services has informed the campus community that Academy Street will close at 4 p.m. from Main Street to Lovett Avenue to allow for race set-up.
At 7 p.m. the run will start causing brief delays on several streets surrounding the run route.
The run will travel the following route: south on Academy Street, east on Courtney Street, east on Ashley Road, north on South Chapel Street, east on Wyoming Road to the Early Learning Center, south through the parking lot to James Hall Trail, west on James Hall Trail to Academy Street, west on Waterworks Lane, north on Wollaston Avenue, east on Kells Avenue, north on Academy Street to the finish line just south of Delaware Avenue.
Minor delays are expected on Delaware Avenue, East Park Place and South Chapel Street at the start of the race. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling through this area.
Saturday’s Winterfest will feature entertainment, roasted chestnuts, caroling, ice carving demonstrations and a tree-lighting ceremony.
Winterfest is a joint effort by the Newark Parks and Recreation Department, UD and the Downtown Newark Partnership, of which the University is a member.
