4:57 p.m., Dec. 17, 2013--This year's Toys for Tots campaign at the University of Delaware, coordinated by the Department of Public Safety, gathered more than 1,000 toys.

This year, five drop-off locations were available across the campus -- Public Safety, the Trabant University Center, the UD bookstore, the Perkins Student Center and the Fred Rust Ice Arena -- so that new, unwrapped toys could be donated for distribution as gifts to needy children. The program is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

FYI Stories

'Contactless' ONEcard

The UD ID card will be replaced by the ONEcard, which incorporates a chip and features a new technology initiative called "contactless," meaning the card can be placed near a reader device rather than swiped.

Food Bank boost

University of Delaware Parking Services' monthlong food drive program, in which motorists could make donations to pay parking citations, provided over 6,000 nonperishable food items to the Food Bank of Delaware.

"This year's campaign was a huge success," Yvonne Simpson, business administrator in the Department of Public Safety, said. "Thank you to everyone in the UD community who participated, and a special thanks to our drop-off location partners."

The UD drive was coordinated by Master Police Office John Betsch and Cpl. Frank Besaw.
