UD Police arrest suspect in Aug. 19 shooting incident

10:59 a.m., Aug. 28, 2013--University of Delaware Police arrested Brandon M. Fletcher, 20, of the 200 block of Highland Blvd., New Castle, on Aug. 27 in connection with the shooting incident that occurred around 10:55 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, at basketball courts on the University of Delaware Laird Campus in Newark.

Fletcher was charged with four counts of first degree reckless endangering, four counts of aggravated menacing, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and criminal mischief. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $1.4 million cash bail. He also was issued a no contact order with the University and an unconditional trespass warning.

University of Delaware Police Chief Patrick Ogden said that the University's campus-wide video surveillance system was key to the investigation. "The investment the University has made in such public safety technology enhancements over the past few years greatly enhanced our ability to resolve this case and others. We were able to identify strong leads immediately."

Ogden thanked UD officers who worked tirelessly on the investigation and he noted that the resolution of this case was the result of their determination and assistance provide by several other agencies. He also thanked the Delaware Attorney General's Office, Delaware Probation and Parole, Delaware State Police, Middletown Police Department, Newark Police Department, New Castle County Police Department, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshal's Service for the collaborative effort. 

In connection with this case, UD Police also arrested Antonio Cox, 21, of the 200 block of Highland Blvd, New Castle, and charged him with hindering prosecution and possession of ammunition by a person prohibited. He was transported to the Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $22,000 secured bond. 

Earlier UD Police arrested Antonio A. McCray-Bradley, 21, of the unit block of Marlborough Court in New Castle, and charged him with hindering prosecution and providing a false statement to law enforcement. He was released on $4,000 unsecured bond. 

None of the suspects is a University of Delaware student. 

In the Aug. 19 incident, an argument between two men on the basketball court escalated into a fistfight, and then one of the participants went to a parked vehicle, retrieved a weapon and returned, firing multiple rounds. No one was injured in the incident.
