Mr. Kirkpatrick, who died Jan. 18, was elected to UD's Board of Trustees in 1982 and served as chairman from 1988-99. When he retired from the board in 2003, he was named Honorary Counselor in recognition of his long and distinguished service to the University. In 2005, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University.
In a memorial piece printed in the DSBA Bar Journal, A. Gilchrist Sparks, current chairman of UD's Board of Trustees, wrote, "During his tenure as Chair, he oversaw a difficult transition in leadership at the University, ultimately resulting in the selection of Dr. David Roselle as President, which led to a remarkable period of growth and fiscal stability and laid the groundwork for the upward trajectory the University continues to experience today."
