Newark Police investigate two unrelated robberies

9:02 p.m., Sept. 26, 2012--Newark Police are investigating two unrelated robberies that occurred during the late afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The first occurred around 4:40 p.m. on the sidewalk just west of the St. Johns Cemetery at the corner of Elkton Road and West Park Place. The 20-year-old male victim was walking on the sidewalk when he was approached by a man with a knife who demanded cash. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect walked away and was last seen walking eastbound on West Park Place. The victim, who is a student at UD's English Language Institute, was not injured.

TA Orientation

The University of Delaware will hold TA Orientation for incoming graduate teaching assistants on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Clayton Hall.

Oct. 27 deadline

Tuition Exchange Program applications for new scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year are now being accepted from UD faculty and staff through the Educational Benefits web form.

The suspect is described as 30 to 35 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 240 pounds, with brown curly hair and a beard. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt, described as very dirty, and a black baseball hat, with no writing or symbols on it. The suspect spoke with slurred speech. 

The second incident occurred around 6 p.m. on the north sidewalk of Delaware Avenue in front of 240 East Delaware Avenue. A 28-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk carrying an iPod in his hand, when a man on a bicycle rode by and grabbed the electronic device from his hand. The suspect then fled on the bicycle and was last seen traveling east on Delaware Avenue. The victim was not injured.

The suspect in this incident is described as 14 to 18 years old, 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a horizontally stripped black and white hooded sweatshirt with a yellow T-shirt underneath and was riding a purple bicycle.

Members of the University community are reminded to observe the following safety guidelines:

• Show a confident attitude and be alert and aware of your surroundings. Follow common sense safety precautions at all times.

• Avoid walking alone at night. Walk with a group, ride a UD shuttle bus or call for a walking escort.

• Use crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signals to cross streets.

• Report all suspicious activity by calling 911 from on or off campus.
