Denial-of-service issues

Banks work to address problems with Internet access

TEXT SIZE

4:55 p.m., Sept. 21, 2012--Many major U.S. banks have been hit by a series of denial-of-service events this month, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and PNC Bank.

A denial-of-service occurs when an external party or parties overwhelm an organization's Internet connection with illegitimate traffic, so that actual customers are crowded out. The problem is an issue with traffic volume and does not involve breach of confidential data.
