Young UD alumni invited to double their giving through Rosenberg Challenge

10:17 a.m., Oct. 15, 2012--Undergraduate alumni who graduated since 2003 from the University of Delaware are invited to participate in the Rosenberg Challenge.

Sponsored by UD alumni Michael and Joanne Rosenberg, both members of the Class of 1988, the challenge provides a one-to-one match for all gifts up to $1,000 made by undergraduate alumni from the Classes of 2003-12.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Michael Rosenberg, an Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics alumnus, and Joanne Rosenberg, a College of Health Sciences graduate, met nearly 30 years ago as neighbors in the Russell B residence hall. They have remained active in the UD community and are committed to supporting future Blue Hens. 

Beth Brand, associate vice president for development, said she is pleased with the results of the challenge since it began on Oct. 1.  “In the two weeks since the Rosenberg Challenge launched, more than 100 young alumni have made gifts to support their passions at the University of Delaware,” she said. “Thanks to Rosenbergs’ generous commitment, countless students and faculty will be impacted across campus.”

So far, the 102 young alumni donors who have had their gifts matched by the challenge generated more than $8,000 for UD. The Rosenberg Challenge will match any and all areas of interest that young alumni have chosen to support, which include the College of Engineering, men’s crew team and the Honors Program, among the most popular.

The Rosenbergs said they expect the challenge to inspire young alumni to give back to UD to the areas about which they are most passionate, whether they choose academics, athletics, the arts, environmental issues or scholarship support.

“UD shaped who we are and prepared us well for the future. That is why we give back,” said Joanne Rosenberg. “Through this challenge, Michael and I hope to inspire young people to give back to whichever areas at the University of Delaware were most meaningful to them when they were students.”
