City streets to be closed for Newark Halloween Parade on Sunday
1:48 p.m., Oct. 22, 2012--City streets will be closed to traffic when Newark holds its 65th annual Halloween Parade on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 28.
The parade will begin on Tyre Avenue at 3 p.m. and will continue down Main Street to North College Avenue.

The following streets will be closed from 2:30-5 p.m. for the parade:
- Main Street, from Library Avenue to South College Avenue;
- Delaware Circle;
- Tyre Avenue; and
- Delaware Avenue, from Chapel Street to Library Avenue, from 2:30-4 p.m.
Delays are expected in the area during the event.
Parade organizers invite ghosts, goblins, princesses, fairies and all other Halloween characters to invade downtown to safely celebrate the holiday.
Following the parade, costumed children will blanket Main Street as they enjoy goodies and activities while safely walking from business to business during Trick-or-Treat Main Street. Main Street businesses are open for shopping and trick-or-treating while Main Street is closed to vehicular traffic throughout the event for the safety of the children.
The lawn of the University of Delaware’s Academy Building will have a decorated area for photography.
Groups interested in participating in the parade should contact the city of Newark Parks and Recreation Department at 302-366-7060 for an application. Costumed individuals or families who want to parade down Main Street may do so by checking in with Parks and Recreation staff at George Read Park -- across from Newark High School -- by 2:30 p.m. the day of the parade.
This event is coordinated by the Newark Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Newark Partnership, of which UD is a member.
